Team
This website is developed by the researchers and staff of the INEQKILL research project. Bringing together expertise in demography, history, epidemiology, geography and data science, the team combines historical research, data analysis, cartography and science communication to make two centuries of mortality research accessible to a broad audience.
Below you can learn more about the people behind the atlas and their roles in developing its content, data and visualisations.
Project coordination
Prof. Dr. Sylvie Gadeyne | Interface Demography, Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Principal investigator of the INEQKILL project and coordinator of the Atlas of Mortality Inequalities in Belgium.
Editorial coordination & website
Sarah Heynssens | Quetelet Center for Quantitative Historical Research, Ghent University & Earth and Life Institute, UCLouvain
Responsible for the editorial coordination of the atlas, including content development, image selection and website design.
Maps & data visualization
Torsten Wiedemann | Quetelet Center for Quantitative Historical Research, Ghent University & Earth and Life Institute, UCLouvain
Develops the atlas’s maps, figures and visualisations, translating demographic, statistical and geographic data into accessible visual representations.
Data Management
Sven Vrielinck | Quetelet Center for Quantitative Historical Research, Ghent University
Manages the historical databases that underpin the atlas, ensuring the data are accurate, consistent and well documented.
Jean-Paul Sanderson | Centre de Recherche en Démographie, UCLouvain
Coordinates the contemporary mortality databases used throughout the atlas,.
Steering group & editorial oversight
The scientific direction of the atlas is guided by the INEQKILL steering group, which provides strategic oversight and contributes to the editorial development of the platform.
Prof. Dr. Isabelle Devos | Quetelet Center for Quantitative Historical Research, Ghent University
Prof. Dr. Sophie Vanwambeke | Earth and Life Institute, UCLouvain
Prof. Dr. Thierry Eggerickx | Centre for Demographic Research, UCLouvain
Prof. Dr. Philippe Bocquier | Centre for Demographic Research, UCLouvain
Authors
Most articles published in the atlas are written by researchers involved in the INEQKILL project, drawing on their expertise in subjects such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, migration and health inequalities. Members of the steering group also contribute articles within their areas of expertise. As the atlas continues to expand, additional authors and contributions will be added.
